Editorial on  Soap making units in Bathinda openly flout pollution norms.

  • Many soap making and other industrial units are discharging untreated toxic liquid and hard waste in the open.
  • At an area called New focal point on the Dabwali road, the pollutants are being discharged.
  • The untreated wastes are allegedly carried in the vehicles before being discharged in the open.

The units are primarily responsible for discharging two types of substances:-

  1. Fatty acids-. Which are relatively less harmful.
  2. Oil residue grime ( blackish hard waste or gear) – which is quite harmful.

Bathinda Small Industries’ Association has said that the Matter has been brought to the notice of the authorities but no concrete action has been taken.

Even though some show-cause notices and directions for closure were slapped, but the fact that there are more than 100 small and medium scale Industrial units mainly:-

1. Electrical Transformers

2. soap manufacturing.

  • Here, around 4000 workers have been employed.

So, the overall reasons for such violation of environmental norms are:-

  1. Lack of political will.
  2. Dormant civil society as the Industrial units continue polluting the environment with impunity.
  3. Lack of monitoring by the environment enforcement authorities.
  4. Lack of overall wastage disposal infrastructure in the state.
