About HIV AIDS:

What Is HIV?

  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection, making a person more susceptible to other infections and illnesses.

How did that spread?

  • It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected intercourse (intercourse without a condom or HIV medicine to prevent or treat HIV), or through sharing injection drug equipment.
  • If not treated, HIV may lead to AIDS disease (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

Treatment:

  • The human body cannot get rid of HIV, nor is there an effective cure for HIV. So once you have HIV, you have it forever.
  • However, by taking HIV medication (called antiretroviral therapy or ART), people living with HIV can lead long, healthy lives and prevent HIV transmission to their sexual partners.
  • In addition, there are effective methods to prevent getting HIV through intercourse or drug use, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

When it identified first?

  • First identified in 1981, HIV is the cause of one of humankind’s deadliest and most persistent outbreaks.

What does AIDS mean?

  • AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body’s immune system is severely injured due to the virus.
  • In the United States, most people living with HIV do not develop AIDS because taking anti-HIV medications every day, as prescribed, stops the progression of the disease.
