Topic: Punjab Republic Day Tableau.

 

What is the news?

  • The Republic Day tableau of Punjab in 2021 reflects the theme of the unparalleled and supreme sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The ninth Sikh guru who gave his life to support the everlasting values of humanity, religious coexistence and freedom of faith.
  • The Guru took up the cause of Kashmiri Pandits who were facing religious persecution due to the orthodox religious policy of Mughal king Aurangzeb and was martyred on November 11, 1675, at Chandni Chowk. The entire tableau delineates an aura marking the 400th Parkash Purb of the ninth Sikh Guru.

 

Important:

  • Notably, the tableau of Punjab has been selected for the Republic Day parade for the fifth consecutive year. The state’s tableau got the third position in 2019.
  • The Martyrdom Day of Guru Tegh Bahadur is also observed as Shaheed Diwas each year on November 24.

 

About Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji:

  • Guru Tegh Bahadur, known as ‘Hind Di Chadar’, was a great philosopher, spiritual leader and poet.
  • The term of Guru Tegh Bahadur as Guru ran from 1665-1675.
  • The Guru Granth Sahib contains a hundred and fifteen hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur had established community kitchens and wells for local populations wherever he went.
  • Anandpur Sahib, the famous holy city and a world tourist attraction in the foothills of the Himalayas, was established by Guru Tegh Bahadur.

What is the news?

  • Ludhiana businesswoman Rajni Bector bags Padma Shri.
  • From an unfamiliar name to one that matters now. Thus reads the success story of an octogenarian Ludhiana businesswoman, Rajni Bector, who rose from her backyard business with a paltry investment of Rs 300 to successfully raising a whooping Rs 541 crore from the market, and become an undisputed business tycoon.
  • The IPO of her company—Mrs Bector’s Food Specialities—having made history by getting oversubscribed 198 times and listing at 74 per cent premium on the offer price, is fast becoming the buzz word in the business world.
  • Recognizing her contribution to the trade and industry, the Union Government on Monday conferred the prestigious Padma Shri to Rajni.

 

Important:

  • She was one of five recipients in Punjab, who received the fourth highest civilian award.

 

About Padma Shri Award:

  • Padma Shri, also spelled Padma Shree, is the fourth highest civil reward in the Republic of India, after Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan.
  • It is awarded by the Government of India every year on India’s Republic Day.

 

Important:

 

Who is eligible for the Padma Shri award?

  • All persons regardless of race, occupation, position or gender are eligible for these prizes. However, Government servants including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible for these awards.

 

It was also given to distinguished persons who were not citizens of India, but who contributed in various ways to India.

What is the news?

  • Bikramjit Singh Brar, who is serving as Deputy Superintendent in Organized Crime Control Unit (OCCU), was among the personnel selected for Police Medal for Gallantry on the eve of Republic Day.

 

Why important?

  • Punjab DSP bags the third medal for gallantry, an only officer from Punjab to do so.
  • Brar was first awarded the medal in 2011 for arresting the dreaded gangster Rajiv Raja at the Samrala bus stand in 2010.
  • He got the second medal for neutralizing dreaded gangster Vicky Gounder in Rajasthan and the third one for neutralizing gangster Ankit Bhadu in February 2019 in Zirakpur where three of latter’s associates were arrested after the criminals had held two girls and their father hostage.
