News:-Use ‘Drug-Free’ app to help nab peddlers: Cops to people.

Context:-

  • To eradicate drug menace from society, the Kullu police have urged people to use the “Drug-Free Himachal” app to share information about drug peddlers.

How does it work?

  • According to the police, the common man can share information easily about drug peddlers on this app. It will play a helping hand for the police to nab peddlers.

Previous challenge:-

  • It was observed that a majority of people do not like to disclose their names and addresses while sharing information.
  • Due to that many people refrain from giving information to the police.
  • Now they can use the app. The information shared on the app will be secret as no one can access the name and address of an informer.

Challenges:-

  • Controlling drug trade has become a daunting task because the nexus among drug traders are increasingly getting stronger. They lure youths, sometimes Nepali residents, for drug supply. A number of drug peddlers have been arrested in Mandi, Kullu, Chamba and other districts.
  • The Chief Minister had launched the app last year. But due to poor publicity among masses about this app, the police could not get the desired results. Now the police have decided to ensure wide publicity about this app among the masses.

Topic:- Important Day

News:- National Science Day celebrated on 28th Feb at CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Biosphere technology, Palampur.

Why it is celebrated every year?

  • To celebrate the discovery of Raman effect by famous scientist C V Raman for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

The theme of this year National Science Day:-

Women in Science.

Highlights:-

  • To boost the bio-based economy.
  • Role of Gut bacterial on Human health.

What is Raman effect and C V Raman got this idea?

  • In 1921, C.V. Raman was on a trip to Europe when he noticed the striking blue colour of some icebergs and the Mediterranean Sea. He got the curiosity to understand the process behind the phenomenon.

What is Raman Effect?

  • The Raman Effect is the process of scattering of light particles by molecules of a medium. The scattering of light occurs due to a change in the wavelength of light as it enters the medium. When a beam of light travels through a dust-free, transparent chemical, a small fraction of the light scattered in directions other than where it should.
  • Light consists of particles called photons, whose energy is directly proportional to the frequency with which they travel. When they strike molecules in a medium at high speeds, they bounce back and scatter in different directions depending on the angle with which they hit the molecules.
  • Most of these scatterings are elastic — the photons retain their energy and are deflected with the same speed as they were travelling with.
  • However, once in a while, the molecules of the medium-light pass through absorb or give energy to photons that strike them. The light particles then bounce with decreased or increased energy, and thus, frequency.

Important:-

  • Physicist C.V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect, which gave Asia its first Nobel in the Sciences in 1930.
  • First Nobel to Non-white person and for an Indian scientist.
