About Teachers day:-

  • The Engineering Community across India celebrates Engineers Day on 15 September every year as a tribute to the greatest Indian Engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
  • Visvesvaraya was also the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.
  • This year the theme of Engineers day is “Engineering For Change”.

Topic:- Road accidents in Himachal Pradesh

(Important for Mains)

 

News:-Overspeeding behind 62% of accidents in hilly areas.

1,679 mishaps reported in the first seven months of the year.

 

Reasons for accidents:-

  • Carelessness in negotiating curves accounted for 248 accidents followed by dangerous overtaking (109), violation of passage (87), drug abuse (50) blind curve (37), absence of crash barriers (32) and dangerous driving (27).

 

Areas in HP:-

  • The maximum accidents (288) were reported in Shimla district, 279 in Kangra, 228 in Mandi, 205 in Solan, 165 in Una, 161 in Sirmaur, 106 in Kullu, 94 in Bilaspur, 73 in Chamba, 63 in Hamirpur, 25 in Kinnaur and 10 in Lahaul & Spiti.

 

Major cause:-

  • Human error is responsible for over 93 per cent of the accidents while 4.86 per cent of accidents occurs due to bad road conditions.

 

Rules for Hilly areas:-

  • In hilly roads, curves are designed for speed of 45 km per hour on national highways and 25 km per hour on village roads. Negotiating a curve at the speed of 70-80 often results in accidents and, therefore, in a majority of cases, vehicles overturn.

 

Steps were taken by the government:-

1) Rectification of black spots

2) Better engineering of hill roads.

3) Use of signages and speedometers.

4) Erection of parapets at accident-prone sites.

5) Awareness of traffic rules among citizens.

6) Strict enforcement of the law.

7) Punishment for violators and deployment of the police at vulnerable locations are a few remedial steps to check accidents.

News: -Log huts, cactus park to come up at Pandoh.

 

Context:-Rs 5 crores would be spent on developing the Pandoh dam area and Bakhli temple for eco-tourism purpose in Mandi district.

 

Purpose:-

  • Under this project, log huts would be constructed for the stay of tourists.
  • For the attraction of tourist, a cactus park would be developed in the vicinity of the dam.
  •  Fish points will be developed, where tourist would be able to enjoy angling activity.

 

What is Cactus Park?

  • Cactus Park (8 hectares) is a commercial park with a botanical garden containing thousands of cactus and succulents, as well as a modest animal collection including yaks, goats, sheep, ducks, etc.
