Topic: Geological Identified Site in Himachal

What is the news?

  • Geological Survey of India (GSI) has identified two geological heritage sites in the Indian Himalayan Region of India.The details of the two sites identified by GSI in the Himalayan Region are as follows:

 

 

Location in Himachal Pradesh:

Himachal Pradesh,Siwalik Fossil Park,Saketi,Sirmur District

  • The Siwalik Fossil park displays a rich collection of vertebrate fossils recovered from the Siwalik rocks of the area of Plio-Pleistocene age. The deposition of Siwalik sediments took place in the narrow linear depression, called the ‘fore deep’, which started developing in front of the Himalayas since the inception of its uplift in the middle Miocene.

Second Site:

Sikkim :Stromatolite bearing Dolomite / Limestone of Buxa Formation

Location: Mamley, near Namchi, South District

  • The Geoheritage site at Mamley exposes lithounits of Buxa Formation, Daling Group of Proterozoic age. The dolostones are profusely stromatolitic (Precambrian algal structures). This site provides one of the rare examples of early life in the Sikkim Himalaya.

 

These two geological heritage sites of Indian Himalayan region are not on the verge of disappearance. These sites are preserved in the respective States.

  • Ministry of Mines has approached Ministry of Culture to explore the possibility of inclusion of Geological Heritage sites declared by GSI, under the purview of existing Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958 (amended in 2010), by making suitable amendment in the Act.

What is the news?

  • Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district has bagged Second position among 30 districts of the country in successful implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) 2021-22.
  • Himachal Pradesh (Mandi Distt) has also secured second position at the national level for construction of roads under PMGSY.
  • Udhampur of Jammau bagged first position.

 

Total 4 Districts of Himachal Scored under 30:

1) 20th Rank: Kangra
2) 21st Rank: Chamba
3) 28th Rank: Shimla

What is the news?

  • MOU between Himachal Pradesh Central University and ISRO.

 

Purpose:

  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is keen to set up a telescope in Himachal to assist in the detection and follow-up of space debris around geosynchronous altitudes. The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Central University will also be able to accelerate research programs with the help of the telescope.
  • An online MoU was signed between the Central University and ISRO on Friday.

What is the news?

  • The Himachal Police have identified 142 black spots that witness frequent fatal accidents. As per the road accident data of the past five years compiled by the Police Department, on an average more than 1,100 persons died in 2,700 accidents.
  • Vulnerable spots have been identified by the SPs on the basis of frequent roll down accidents taking place in all 12 districts.

  • As per the road accident data of the past five years, on an average more than 1,100 persons died in 2,700 accidents.
    A total of 217 persons died in 553 accidents in the state from January 1 to April 1 this year, as compared to 307 casualties in 595 accidents during the corresponding period last year.
    Vulnerable spots have been identified by SPs on the basis of frequent roll down mishaps.

However, going by this year’s data, more than two persons are killed and nine are injured in six accidents everyday.
  • The highest number of 30 black spots has been identified in Kullu, followed by 21 in Shimla, 12 each in Bilaspur and Mandi, 10 each in Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Sirmaur and Una, nine in Hamirpur, five in Solan and four in Lahaul and Spiti.
  • The details of accident-prone stretches (black spots) have been shared with the Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for taking necessary engineering interventions/improvements, including installation of crash barriers, widening of narrow stretches, removal of debris and erection of signboards, say sources in the Police Department.

What is the news?

  • A quiz on the theme “Our planet, our health” was organised at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Bilaspur on World Health Day yesterday by the Department of Community and Family Medicine.
  • There were four rounds in the contest. As many as six teams of MBBS students participated in the quiz. Winners of the competition were awarded prizes and certificates.
